Rushwater Holt is situated in the south-west corner of the main continent on the World of Two Moons. To the west lays the shoreline of the Vast Deep Water and to the east the mountain range known as World's Spine. Rushwater Holt itself lays between these two awesome natural wonders in the bottom of a series of magificent canyons often referred to as World's Veins.

RWH Map

Life teams in the bottom reaches of the World's Veins. Fast running river rapids sweep through the canyon floors, their mighty roar echoing off the topmost canyon walls. Lush forests also cover the area ranging in density from thick to sparse and are home to numerous forms of wildlife, both beautiful and deadly. This wild and whimsical geography much resembles the Grand Canyon and Colorado River with many offshoot canyons and rivers.

Rushwater Holt

Rushwater Holt is more or less centralized within the World's Veins Canyons and is located in the thicker temperate redwood rainforest in the base of the canyons. The holt itself consists of clusters of shaped tree dens surrounding a huge, even for giant redwoods, central tree the elves have named the Elder Tree. Dens are several hundred feet high up from the forest floor for safety against flooding, animals and the threat of humans. Atop a nearby plateau the wolf pack makes its home in a series of caves.

The World's Veins - Canyons
The canyons are large and maze-like in shape and have a red to sandy brown hue that shines warmly in the early dawn light. Eroded from thousands of years of river water, many of the walls have been smoothed down and small caves are frequent near the base, often flooding in the spring with the rising river water. The dangers are many here, especially when weather becomes bad but the elves have found a holt with good hunting and fishing and it is generally secure from humans, although recent years have seen more humans braving their superstitions of the area. © Robb Waterman

Rushwater - Great River
One large, fast flowing river winds its way through the World's Veins, breaking off intermittently to travel down offshoot canyons. Rough rapids are frequent along the river's wild path and it roars its mighty power loudly. Fish and other water animals are plentiful throughout the river but fishing in the rough water can be hazardous. © George Lamont Mancuso

Inlets and Eddies
Due to the rock plateaus, smaller inlets and eddies occasionally form, often in the damper seasons of spring and autumn. These oasises of calmer water often also hold many fish and plant life. The elves can often be found lounging near these tranquil pools during the intense heat of summer, bathing, fishing and relaxing. © Jennifer Parson

Temperate Rainforest
Along with the migthy roaring river at the bottom of the World's Veins Canyons is a sprawling forest. The forest varies in density from thick temperate rainforest found on the canyon floor to more sparse tropical savanna-like areas reaching up into the higher plateaus. Plants and animals of all kinds can be found in abundance throughout. © Robb Waterman

World's Spine - Surrounding Land, Mountains
To the east lays the World's Spine, a moderate expanse of mountain range. This is where the troll colony has dug into to create their domain and is several days ride from Rushwater Holt. © Mike Buchheit

Vast Deep Water - Surrounding Lands, Ocean

To the west lays the Vast Deep Water, an large oceanic expanse of water and exotic sea life. Very few Rushwater Holt elves have ever gone to the Vast Deep and as such, it is not explored much. It has been known for the occasional elf with wanderlust to travel this distance and back to the holt to recount tales of the great water body but otherwise it is not an area of familiarity to the elves. Springtime at the Vast Deep's shores often brings severe flooding and hurricanes off this coastal region that wrecks havoc for the elves and human tribe.

Widesky Grasses - Surrounding Lands, Plains

Several days ride to the south-west are the plains. Only during extreme bouts of scarce hunting do the elves venture out to the plains to find food. It is known to the elves that the Land Lopers travel throughout the plains while not in the canyons and as such, they know to be weary of this land and avoid it when at all possible. The huge openess of the plains also makes the forest-dwelling elves uncomfortable.
