Seasons and Climate...

The area of the World's Vein Canyons, in which Rushwater Holt is situated within, is an area of warm temperate latitude on the main continent mass of the World of Two Moons. Likewise, this warm temperate latitude makes for an equally warm temperate environment within the canyons and the rainforest that runs through it. Below is a description of each season experienced in the canyon rainforests, including average length, temperature ranges and water-fall amounts.

NOTE: 'Temperate' is a vitally key word, meaning 'medium' - temperatures stay within a relatively modest range all year round - neither too cold nor too hot.

'Bloom Rest' is the name the elves have taken to calling the few short months of the year when the plants loose their flowers and quietly recharge nutrients and energy in their roots before flowering again. As the name indicates, this is a period of rest for the plants and animals of the canyon forests but not to the extent of hibernation. The winter months are short but the temperatures are mild and very rarely drop to the point of freezing. As such, snow is very uncommon, except periodically on the highest canyon peaks and the volcanic mountains far away where the trolls dwell. The great Rushwater River has never been known to freeze completely over so water and fishing is always accessible and plentiful. Rainfall does ease up during this time, however.

After the quiet, dry times of Blood Rest, the appearance of New Flood is a swift explosion within the canyon forest. Deluges of rainfall beat the ground and rise the Rushwater River's water levels to overflowing, causing regular floods that serve to renew the plant life, which quickly soak up the refreshment and burst into full, colourful bloom once more. Breeding season among the animals begins, evoking a plethora of calls, strutting, fighting and nest-building, and the spawning fish clog the rivers in their urge to locate ancient spawning beds. New Flood is a time not just of water spilling over its boundaries but a flood of ripe colour, reawakened smells and lively noises.

Summertime dominates the canyon forest seasons, which is why the elves have dubbed this season 'Long Sun'. The frantic intensity of New Flood gradually eases into the warm, humid tranquility that summer brings. As temperatures rise slightly further to their typical peaks, the elves tend to prefer the solace of night over the blistering eye of the sun and can be frequently found lounging by the river partaking in various river-related activities.

Weather becomes unpredictable during Storm Rage season. Colder winds sweep in from the Vast Deep Waters and collide with the warm winds of the canyon forests, causing thick fog and an increase in storm frequency. Hurricanes are a high risk during this season, when the fearsome, twisting vortexes can become caught in the network of canyon veins and run their lengths with devastating results. Temperatures drop as a result of the mixing winds and storm activity quickly drains the rainfall out of the environment, leading into the drier season of Bloom Rest.
